By Adam Collins
In my first 2 predictions I had the Cowboys keeping all three QB's (Prescott, Rush, and White). Rush and White have not looked good in preseason at all... Because of Rush's success in last years preseason, I will give him the nod to make the roster. I can't see Mike White making this team unless he picks it up in the final 2 preseason games. Let's just say this, if Dak goes down with an injury I really hope we'd bring in a vet because I don't feel very confident with this QB room after Dak.
Jamize Olawale (FB)
Zeke, Rod, and Jamize are all locks to me. It's hard to not see Bo making this team so I'm going to put him in here too. I can't see Darius Jackson making the team this year although he played great the other night. I can see him signing to the practice squad.
Tavon Austin (flex)
Yes I know Tavon is listed as a RB, but from what I've seen in camp and preseason so far he's nearly always out wide. I'd like to see guys like Gallup, Thompson, and Brown get more targets than TWill. Twill looked good in the last preseason game and I think he makes this team easy. To me, the locks at WR right now are Gallup, Hurns, Beasley, Austin, and Twill. I was very high on Deonte Thompson making this team, but he has been struggling with an achilles injury so I think he will start the season on IR. If we carry 7 here, Brown and Lenoir should both make it. If we decide to only keep 6 here, then it gets a little dicey. I've always been extremely high on Noah Brown because of his potential upside, but he's been battling a hamstring injury all of camp and has been limited. Meanwhile, Lance Lenoir has been turning heads in camp. I don't want to see either of these guys go, so I hope they will both make the 53'man because they both have tremendous upsides.
Carrying 4 TE's is a little crazy and I just don't think Rico makes the cut. I know that's not a very popular opinion and I know a lot of people will hate on me for it. Yes, he had that amazing grab last game, but just watch him when he's in there. He's not very quick and his routes are very sloppy. In camp, he's been the 4th TE clearly. If we do decide to carry 4 TE's here then he makes it, but if not then he will likely get cut. Rico has so much upside because of his insane athletic abilities so I would hope we could sign him to the practice squad if he doesn't make the team. I really like what I'm seeing out of Jarwin and I expect him to take that TE1 role ad run with it. Lets see which one of these guys steps up to fill the shoes of GOAT Witten.
Z. Martin through Fleming is definitely a lock to me. The last couple spots here pretty much comes down to Marcus Martin, Kadeem Edwards, Joe Looney, and Chaz Green in my opinion. For now I'm going to go with Looney and Edwards because they've looked the best out of those 4. Chaz Green still just looks awkward in there so I can't see him making the team. Looney isn't a bad fill-in at center while Frederick is out. I really like Looney because he can pretty much play anywhere on the O-Line.
I see Tank, Crawford, Taco, and Gregory as locks to make this team. Also in play here are Charles Tapper, Kony Ealy, and Dorance Armstrong for the last two spots in my opinion. Because Irving is suspended for 4 games, I could very well Tapper an Armstrong making this team. I can see Ealy and Tapper getting moved to the inside of the D-Line while Irving is suspended, but right now I don't see Ealy making the team. After Randy Gregory came back and has looked like a starting DE, I just don't see Ealy making this roster.
Collins, Ward, and Woods are definite locks at DT. I think Brian Price will get the nod over Richard Ash for that final spot. This position will have lots of changes throughout the season when Datone Jones (knee) comes back from injury and when Irving comes back from his 4-game suspension. David Irving* (Suspended 4 games so not on original 53-man roster)
Leighton Vander Esch
Locks here are definitely Lee, Smith, LVE, and Wilson. Thomas is pretty close to a lock for me, as well. The last spot for me comes down to Justin March-Lillard and rookie Chris Covington. I see the Cowboys going with Covington here because he's younger and was just drafted. Don't be surprised if JML snags this last spot, though.
No debate that Chido, Byron, Lewis, and Brown are locks at CB. The final spot will come down to Duke Thomas, Charvarius Ward, and Marquez White. Before camp I didn't even have Ward on my board, but he has had an incredible camp so far. I'd say White is the favorite to grab this last spot since, but I'm going to make another bold prediction and say undrafted FA Charvarius Ward will make the original 53-man roster. Duke Thomas has had. very good preseason as well and I could very well see him making the roster as well.
Woods, Heath, and Frazier are all locks at safety. I think we will carry 5 safeties to start the season while Woods is recovering from the hamstring injury. The last 2 spots would come down to Kam Kelly, Maarqueston Huff, and Tyree Robinson. Right now, Kelly's athleticism gives him the nod for me and he has looked just as good as Charvarius Ward this camp. I also think Robinson will make the team because he's had a great camp and preseason as well. Huff could also very well make this roster. These 3 should get a lot of playing time in the next 2 preseason games, so lets wait to see how they look before making our final prediction here.
Nothing to debate here.
Each NFL team can have 10 players on their practice squad. The players that don't make the 53-man roster will have the option to either go elsewhere or sign to the Cowboys practice squad.
