There’s been a lot of speculation on whether the former Baylor basketball star, Rico Gathers, would be able to transform his athletic ability from the basketball court to the gridiron. Last year, Gathers was on the practice squad trying to develop his skills. Well, last night Rico showed up big in his first start at TE. He was estimated to have played around 57 snaps last night which more than doubles the amount of snaps he had in the entire preseason last year. In his 57 snaps, Rico had three catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. If you were watching the HOF Game and watched his TD, you would’ve seen that it almost looked like he boxed out the Cardinals defensive back and reached up to grab the rebound. Everyone who was watching was very impressed by Rico Gathers play last night.
I am going to make a statement now and you can hold it against me later. Rico Gathers is going to make this team this season and actually have an impact. Who better to learn behind than the GOAT Jason Witten? Rico is a big body with tremendous athleticism and I’m excited to see our future with him.
On his performance, Rico said:
“[Coach Jason Garrett] told me to just go out there and play fast, and don’t think as much. I was really just focused on the next play. If something went bad, just focus on the next play. With that mindset it just helped me play fast, make plays when necessary.”
And make plays he did. If Rico keeps up this pace then he will be ready in no time… This touchdown was his first touchdown since his 8th grade season, and he has only returned to football for 1 season. Look out folks, the future for this young man is very bright.
