By Archie Nino IIIHere we are #CowboysNation, can you feel it yet? Ever so slightly we are inching towards the start of mandatory camps leading up to the start of the season. And while the talk is and focused around the rookies (and rightfully so) there is a unique situation at hand for the Dallas Cowboys. The retirement of Doug Free opened up a spot on the right side of the Cowboys offensive line. Arguably one of the best in the league especially in terms of run blocking. Among signing a few OL in recent drafts like La'el Collins and Chaz Green looking to potentiall fill the void.
Speaking of drafts the Dallas Cowboys went outside the draft class and after a weekend workout signed a legit mountain. Dan Skipper, the 6'10 300+ lb, 4 yr starter at Arkansas and 2x All-SEC team selection. He would have most likely been a draft pick for some team however a blood condition made owners skeptical. After Dallas team officials cleared him it was a no brainer. It will be interesting to note if he gets some time playing on the line that is currently without a permanent owner on the right side. Among other offensive line moves it's time to start considering a well deserved extension for Zack Martin. Make no mistake this kid is talented as his accomplishments speak for themselves, Pro Bowler all 3yrs in league, 2x 1st Team All-Pro, and created gaps and lanes for two different rushing champs, Murray and Elliott. Although he is playing on a rookie deal it is interesting to note that Dallas picked up his 5th yr option guaranteeing him on the Cowboys roster through 2018. Why? Because the Cowboys have replicated this formula with both Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick. Picking up 5th yr option in the spring and signing long term by summer, July and August respectively. Either way you look at it Zack Martin fixin to get #Paid. On a more sensitive note just want to take this time to mention Travis Frederick. For those who don't know this absolute stud has two initiatives in the DFW area combating child hunger. His "Block Out Hunger" campaign provides support for lower income youth. As if that wasn't enough this year he plans to start "Nourish To Flourish" a summer which will provide kids who require free lunches meals over the summer break. They certainly don't make them like this anymore. Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin make up the core for the Cowboys offensive line with a host of potential talent looking to line up with the elite. Cowboys have OTAs and Veterans camp coming soon. Til next time #CowboysNation.
