The Dallas Cowboys had one of the best drafts in 2017 if you ask me and I’m going to tell you why. It was obvious for the Cowboys that going into this draft defense was the #1 need, and that’s exactly what we got. Of the 9 players drafted to Dallas, 7 were defense. We got a pass rusher, in Taco Charlton, with great length and an extremely high upside. We then targeted our secondary and I think that’s where Jerry Jones struck gold. We got Chidobe Awuzie in the second round. Awuzie had great numbers for 4 seasons with Colorado and I really like that pick. I expect Awuzie to start for the Dallas Cowboys this season. Next, we drafted Jourdan Lewis in the 3rd round. He was projected to be a late first round pick until a report about domestic violence came out. Now obviously I would never root for anyone to get away with something like that, but if the facts come out and Lewis is clean, then we got a big time corner in the 3rd round. Next we got who I would call the #1 punt returner in college football the last few seasons, WR Ryan Switzer. I really like this pick because it will give Lucky Whitehead some competition and I feel like Switz can develop into a Julian Edelman type slot receiver, especially learning behind Cole Beasley.
The two biggest steals of the draft for me would have to be S Xavier Woods in the 6th round and WR Noah Brown in the 7th round. Woods was projected as high as the 2nd round in some mock drafts and he fell to us in the 6th. He had 14 interceptions in college and if you watch his highlights you will see that he’s a human hit stick. I still expect the starting safeties next season to be Byron Jones and Jeff Heath, but I think that Woods is good enough that he may see the field some his rookie season. Next, I really like the pick of Noah Brown out of OSU in the 7th. I feel as if Brown came out of college a year too soon and that’s why he didn’t get picked until the 7th round. Watching his tape, Brown has the opportunity to become a great wide receiver and he gets to learn behind Dez Bryant. Brown is a big body with great route running skills and incredible hands. Let’s not forget CB Marquez White, DT Joey Ivie, and DT Jordan Carrell. I don’t necessarily view any of these guys having an impact with the Cowboys but they’re all defensive players and I’d view it as a win if only one of them panned out for the ‘Boys. Overall, it was a really good draft for the Dallas Cowboys.
